Sustainable Southeast Green Building Tour

S2C2's green building tour was held during Sustainable Building Week, and included a ribbon cutting at Jolene's First Cousin, a solar affordable housing mixed-use project by Guerrilla Development in partnership with JOIN PDX. Food and drinks were provide from local vendors, with speeches from community leaders, building awards, a tour of the SRO residential project, and other Southeast green buildings including Kailash Eco-Village.

We partnered with Green Roof Information Thinktank (GRIT) to showcase multiple green roof and stormwater management projects on Division, as well other innovative solar projects nearby. Forage Design + Planning helped organize and plan the event in partnership with PDX Main Streets and GRIT, intentionally engaging BIPOC leaders and businesses in the process and a young LGBTQ-identifying journeywoman carpenter who conducted outreach to youth and the trades. Educational materials included maps of the tour routes and handouts featuring mini-case studies that could expand education beyond this single event.   It was a highly successful event and we hope others will be inspired by these projects and use the  tour map to do their own self-guided tours.

International Peace Day Celebration 2023

On September 21, 2023, The S2C2 partnered with the United Nations Portland chapter to celebrate the annual International Day of Peace. We added 2 new Peace Poles with 12 additional languages in a pocket park, and hosted climate speakers and cultural performers. Dr. Kim Smith spoke of the connection between climate, sustainability and international peace, Reverend Kosho Finch, from Henjyoji Shingon Buddhist Temple spoke of the impact of climate change from a Buddhist perspective.

We closed off the street to celebrate with dance, music, art and blessings from Huehca Omeyocan, music from Ukrainian artists Darka Dusty & the Borscht Beatniks, Sushmita Poddar, Cultural Henna Artist, Woshishijen Traditional Ghanian Drumming and dancing. Local artists shared their photography and Ukranian food was served for all to enjoy. It was a wonderful, successful celebration of international peace, education, and understanding of climate change impacts made possible through the support of donations and a small grant from the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF)

PARK(ing) Day Hawthorne Pop-Up Plaza

On September 15, 2023 S2C2 partnered with PDX Main Streets to celebrate World PARK(ing) Day by helping reclaim the street!

We turned parking spaces into parklets, made public gathering spaces with seating and shade, spaces for children and families to play, hosted a game library, had live music, henna artistry, and even tango dancing!

We also gathered community input for a proposed solar kiosk and tested what might be possible for a community plaza in the heart of Hawthorne.
